Volume + Expression Pedal?

Post by Anthony Parish »

Question for the gear gurus out there...

I need a new volume pedal. I also want to use an expression pedal to sweep the tone control of the JHS Mary-K fuzz pedal. I would prefer to use one pedal for both, if possible.

Are there any volume pedals that I could use as both a volume pedal when I'm not using the fuzz and an expression pedal when I am using the fuzz?

Thanks.

From what I have seen the Hotone Ampero Press can do that. It's fairly cheap, might be worth the try.

The Dunlop DVP3 Volume (X) pedal will do both volume (250k pot) and expression (10k pot, same as the Roland EV5 that JHS recommends.) https://www.jimdunlop.com/volume-x-pedal/ for info, https://www.jimdunlop.com/content/manuals/DVP3.pdf for user manual

As J.C. states, the Ampero Press (not the Press II which is the link given, and is an expression-pedal/switch) is both a volume pedal and expression pedal. The correct link is here - https://www.hotone.com/products/press/Ampero%20Press - and you'll see that the volume pedal pot value is 100K, with a 10K expression pedal pot. I think that is just too low for pedal steel. I'd even find that too low for guitar. I think it's designed for their own pedals, and it may be fine for that.

I have two of the Dunlop DVP1-XL pedals, which seem to be an older and somewhat larger version of the DVP3 (X) pedal. I looked over the user manuals for both, and I can't see any difference except the size. Both have 250K volume pots and 10K expression pedal pots. I started playing pedal steel with a 250K Ernie Ball volume pedal, and have used the Dunlop for dual use. 250K can work, especially with buffer like the Sarno Freeloader. However, straight in, I definitely prefer 500K, as is in almost all pedal steel passive volume pedals. Since it's a Dunlop product, it may be possible to sub the Dunlop 470K pot, but I haven't investigated or tried that at this point. This may prompt me to do that, because in general, I like the pedal. It's very heavy-duty (and heavy), and stays put pretty well even on a smooth floor. Some of my other volume pedals slip around on a smooth floor.

I just received a Telonics volume pedal with the expression mod added. The volume pedal feels and sounds great (to me anyways). I wanted the expression output to be able to control other parameters in my rig. It goes into an expression-to-midi box (Doremidi) then I route the midi to whatever parameter I need control over. For example as I increase volume I can increase delay level or time (or invert it) or increase brightness, etc. Note the volume and expression features work at the same time - not either/or. It’s not cheap but it works great.

Buddy let me use a Goodrich volume pedal that controlled the volume (up and down) and left to right controlled the volume of The IVL Pitchrider MIDI interface. It had a multi pronged cord that plugged into the pedal.
Because of the slight delay of the MIDI sound, that bothered me, I liked having the steel sound the loudest and a synth sound underneath that.
With just the synth sound, it was good for pads. but, out front, I could sound like a bad keyboard player.
I've posted this before, but here is clip of Buddy playing excellent organ IVL on one of my songs:

Chris, I have one of those Goodrich dual action pedals. 6PV active by 9v batts. I've been using it with my midi keyboard rig, but I'm reconfiguring things.

I have an old for sale post in the classifieds somewhere. I had it listed for $350 but didn't get any response...it's still there though.
